Common questions
How it actually works.
A few details the kit visual above doesn't cover.
No. The collection kit includes everything they need with full instructions. It works at every US hospital and adds a few minutes to the standard delivery process. Collection happens after the cord is clamped and cut, with no risk to mother or baby.
Bring the kit if you have it on hand. Late enrollments are still possible, call us at 1-866-389-4659 and we'll do our best to make it work.
It's processed within 24 hours: identity, potency, viability, and sterility testing, followed by controlled-rate cryopreservation in our facility. You receive a certificate confirming the unit is in storage with the cell count and viability data. The unit stays in continuously-monitored cryogenic storage for as long as your plan covers.
Studies have shown that properly cryopreserved cord blood can remain viable for decades. Cord blood units have been demonstrated viable after 27 years in frozen storage, and in 2024 StemCyte successfully shipped a unit that had been in storage for more than 23.5 years. Our continuously-monitored cryogenic storage is designed to maintain viability for the full length of your plan.
Yes. A full sibling has a 25% chance of being a perfect HLA match and a 50% chance of being a partial match. Parents are always at least a partial match. Many families bank specifically to protect a future sibling or other family member who may benefit from a related donor unit.
Cord blood is used in transplant medicine for certain blood cancers, immune deficiencies, bone marrow failure syndromes, sickle cell disease, and inherited metabolic disorders. Researchers are also studying cord blood for additional conditions, including cerebral palsy and neonatal brain injury.
StemCyte's published lifetime cord blood plan is $5,625, the lowest of the five major US private banks. We publish standard MSRP openly rather than rely on rotating promotional codes.
